The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-23266 and codenamed “NVIDIAScape,” is a serious flaw discovered in NVIDIA’s “Cloud Native” toolkit. It affects all versions of the NVIDIA Container Toolkit and stems from an OCI hook misconfiguration. With a CVSS rating of 9 out of 10 according to NIST’s official website, this vulnerability poses a significant security risk.
The vulnerability potentially allows attackers to break out of secure container environments. Exploitation can occur when a malicious file is placed inside the container and linked using the ‘LD_PRELOAD’ environment variable. According to an article written by Ravie Lakshmanan, “The shortcoming impacts all versions of NVIDIA Container Toolkit up to and including 1.17.7 and NVIDIA GPU Operator up to and including 25.3.0”.
To mitigate the risks posed by CVE-2025-23266, users should immediately update the NVIDIA Container Toolkit to patched versions that address the OCI hook misconfiguration. Regular software and firmware updates are critical, as unpatched systems remain exposed to privilege escalation, data tampering, and denial-of-service attacks.
